White is an incredibly difficult color to work with, capture, and achieve. In one of my art classes we had to paint a white pot and its shadow without using pure white or black (white or black could be added to tint or shade, respectively) and it was incredibly challenging. In creating this photo I found that the lighting and white balance were causing me more problems than I had anticipated, especially since I wanted to avoid cool or warm temperatures creeping into my image. My main goal was to focus on simplicity in order to study lines, contours and lighting. I really enjoy monochromatic, well, everything, really, so I feel like there's a lot of myself in this photo.

I recently posted the original/un-edited version of this photo but decided something wasn't quite right. I decided to crop in a bit and I like how the lines in this image work better than the original---the focal point is much more apparent, as is the emphasis on the lines, lighting, and liquid feel of the syrup. It's a subtle change, but I feel like this image looks finished now.

Good Morning Sunshine

This is one of my favorite photos from this weekend. Calvin, beloved subject of many of photos, perhaps too many, is watching the birds hop around in the bush outside. I can hear the birds, I can smell the coffee brewing in the kitchen, I can feel the warmth and softness of fluffy white blankets all around me as I wake up on a relaxing Saturday morning. As Sunday night draws to a close, I'll keep this in my mind to calm me during my hectic week!

Fall is almost certainly here! And it's my favorite time of the year (rhyming unintentional). I army-crawled my way up to this goose to capture a few shots before making him too uneasy (read: before wild goose attack). I like the way the evening light looks cool against the warm tones of the changing leaves. Can't wait to get out and get those fall pictures!

J. and I visited the dunes of Old Baldy, just north of Arcadia, MI on M22. It's a beautiful area with amazing views, and I'm looking forward to going back there for the fall colors & again in the winter--I suspect it will be a great snowshoe adventure!

Making our way out to the pier, the seagulls were more worried about the weather than me and didn't bother moving out of my way. Waves kept breaking over the pier heads while the clouds rolled in shades of blue, orange, pink and grey. It was a beautiful evening at Portage Point, Onekama.

Taking a walk in Fernstenberg Park, Ann Arbor. Decidedly lots of inspiration in this little getaway, F.Park appears in nearly all of my short film projects and nature photography albums. It's a wonderful escape if you're a country person (like me) stuck in city (albeit a smaller, quainter, lovable city) for extended periods of time.
